There is little available information on the population status in much of the Mediterranean region, but the overall status is most probably decreasing. In the western Mediterranean Sea, it appears frequently associated to the other seagrass species, Cymodocea nodosa.
In Spain, particularly Andalusian coast, Zostera noltii has showed clear signs of decline. In the Vaccarès Lagoon of France, Zostera noltii beds completely disappeared after the large floods prior 1997, only regaining part of the area the following years (Charpentier et al. 2005). Similar regressions have been reported elsewhere, the species only being able to partially recover its previous densities. Other examples are reported from Venice, Italy (Rismondo et al. 2005) or Greece (Christia et al. 2011) where the affected areas are slow to recover.
In some cases however, the decline of other seagrasses like Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa meadows, has enable Zostera noltii to spread and increase its total surface (Haritonidis et al.1990, Ben Maiz and Shili 2007, Boudouresque et al. 2009).
Overall, the population could be considered fragmented due to the occurrence in separated localities without any connections among each others.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Several regressions have already been documented over the past few decades, with the majority related to modifications in salinity or nutrient enrichment (Ben Maiz and Shili 2007, Bernard et al. 2007). There are however few regressions that do not represent this general trend and the species may benefit from the regression of other seagrass species (Boudouresque et al. 2009).
Coastal and harbor development as well as dredging in shallow coastal lagoons and bays can impact the populations. Invasive macroalgae species might have also further detrimental effects on these habitats although there is a scarcity of studies focusing on this aspect. On the contrary, the growth of zostera seems to be favoured by the presence of the invasive Caulerpa racemosa (Ceccerelli and Campos 2002).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
At Mediterranean level, Zostera noltii is included in the Annex II, List of endangered or threatened species of the Barcelona Convention.
At European level, the Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/CEE), the list of European habitats of interest to protect, includes seagrass habitats. Zostera beds receive special attention within the framework of Natura 2000 sites (the Natura Network Sectorial Plan, RCM no. 115 – A/2008; D.R. no. 139, Série I, 21 July; EU Habitats Directive). They are considered habitats of high sensitivity subject to relevant threats and in need for conservation actions.
Other specific regulations aim to protect seagrass from anthropogenic disturbance. For example, at country level, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, Turkey and Spain have established legislation to protect Zostera noltii.
In Spain, Zostera noltii is classified as Vulnerable in the List of Wildlife Species with Special Protection Regime under the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species (BOE no. 46). Furthermore, the governments of some autonomous regions, including Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, have established regulations to protect this and other seagrass species. In Catalonia’s case, an Order dated 31 July 1991 (DOGC no. 1479 12/08 / 91) includes the protection of Zostera noltii prohibiting the destruction, sale, purchase or use of this species. In the Region of Valencia, the destruction of seagrass meadows is also prohibited because these are areas of fishing importance (DOGV no. 1724, of 14/02/92). The government of the Balearic Islands, through an Order dated 21 September 2991, regulates any fishing, shellfishing and aquaculture activities to be conducted on or above seagrass meadows.
In Italy, Zostera noltii, is nationally protected by the law n°175 dated 27 May 1999 that regulates any activity impacting seagrasses.
In Croatia, Zostera noltii is considered a high priority species for conservation measures thanks to the ordinance on “Proclamation of Wild Taxa as Protected or Strictly Protected” (Official Gazette n°7/2006). In Montenegro, Zostera noltii is also protected by the national legislation as a rare or endangered species (National Gazette 55/03). Similarly the species is protected by the “Circular on sea and inland waters no. 37/1" in Turkey.
