Only known from one herbarium collection, the population of this species is likely to be small. The habitat does, however, have some protection, suggesting that the population may be stable.

Forests of Sumatra are under threat of being logged and converted, and lowland habitat is especially at risk (WWF 2019). There is both protected and unprotected land in Sibolangit.

According to the original publication (Valeton 1918) the species was found in a jungle-reservation which may refer to what are now called Sibolangit Nature Recreation Park and Sibolangit Nature Reserve. It has been recorded by BGCI (2019) to be grown in one ex situ site.
