État de la populationExpert
Some subpopulations are very isolated, found in wetlands in sedimentary basins, which are very distant from each other, sometimes with significant geographical barriers that separate them. The status of populations from Morocco and Sardinia is unknown.

In France, this species is now only found in Camargue, but in the past this species had been collected from Manche and Charente Maritime.

Description complète des menacesExpert
The habitat of the species could be subject to anthropogenic threats such as drainage, filling in or change in salinity. Pollution from agricultural activities, i.e. run off with sediments and fertilizers entering the pools can pose another threat. Negative effects are caused by marsh management for hunting: the marshes are kept under a permanently high water level to provide more biomass and to attract hunters. The marshes keep flooded artificially are also frequent in protected areas for attracting aquatic birds. Invasive species such as Azolla filiculoides, which can be dispersed by birds modifies the habitat structure, limit the development of some populations. The species could be severely affected by introduced species such as Cyprinus carpio a voracious fish which feeds on aquatic plants. Also the consequences of droughts caused by climate change process could be an important threat.

In recent years some of these localities have changed the quality of their waters, towards eutrophication and in many cases, in endorheic temporary pools, they are full of sediments and fertilizers from the neighbouring cultures. In consequence in several of these localities this species is not present any more.

Even in protected areas (e.g. Donana National Park) the habitat of this species is being altered slowly by fertilizers and herbicides which arrive in water from agricultural crops from nearby places.

Besides, in some localities (e.g. Donana National Park) the exotic invasive species Azolla filiculoides have recently appeared and now is expanding. This species modifies the habitat and stops the growth of this species.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
Monitoring of sub-populations is recommended, and seed should be collected for conservation in germplasm banks. Habitat protection is required, and control of agricultural and activities that cause deterioration of water quality. In Morocco and Sardinia especially, extensive research on the presence and potential threats affecting this species is needed.

A regional Spanish law protect this species (Decreto 200/2001, de 6 de noviembre de 2001, Comunidad de Castilla-La Mancha), and the plant is considered Vulnerable in the Red List of Andalucia (Cabezudo et al. 2005). found in protected areas in Spain, including the Doñana National Park and local reserves. In Balearic Islands is listed as Near Threatened (Saez et al. 2015).

This species is quite rare in France and relatively unknown, however the species is protected at the sub-national level (e.g. regional protection in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur; Association Tela Botanica 2015). Additional research is necessary to investigate the distribution in France. Only one locality is protected in the "Réserve regionale of Tour du Valat".
