Zamia vazquezii is known from two subpopulations, but there are no more than 50 plants in the wild and deforestation in northern Veracruz is still rampant. The population is definitely severely fragmented. The last survey was more than a decade ago so the situation may have deteriorated.

Deforestation poses the biggest threat to the survival of this species in the wild. However, as with most species within this genus, it is also susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Wild subpopulations are somewhat protected from over-collection because the species is very common in cultivation, where it also produces copious quantities of cones and grows quite rapidly from seed. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
