Zamia obliqua is known from many localities (more than 20) in the Darien region of Colombia and Panama. In Panama, subpopulations are present in forest-dominated landscapes with low disturbance by human activities, therefore it is suspected that the total population size could be large. In Colombia, many subpopulations also occur in healthy forests. A few demographic studies have been carried out for the species (years 2006 to 2019 in one locality in the Choco province of Colombia). These studies, in addition to general field surveys in Colombia, suggest that several subpopulations have large numbers of adults (more than 250 individuals). It is possible that the species has more subpopulations, therefore further research on population distribution and abundance is required.

Most subpopulations of the species occur in landscapes dominated by forests, with low to moderate disturbance by human activities. Most subpopulations appear to be viable within healthy habitats. A few subpopulations in Colombia, towards the Caribbean in Uraba and the mid Atrato river suffer from some habitat destruction and degradation, mostly deforestation from infrastructure and agricultural development.

This species is listed in CITES Appendix II. Zamia obliqua has many subpopulations occurring in healthy forests, therefore they are suspected to be viable. Some subpopulations are distributed within protected areas (National Parks "Darien" in Panama and "Ensenada de Utria" and "Uramba Bahia Malaga" in Colombia) and the species has been recorded in some ex situ collections (Medellin and Tulua Botanical Gardens in Colombia). A few subpopulations in Colombia are threatened by habitat destruction and degradation, and some actions are required to improve population and habitat viability there. Colombia has a national conservation action plan for Cycads, and some specific conservation actions for the species have been proposed.
