Current estimates are that 200-250 plants exist in the wild. The area where Zamia monticola occurs has been severely impacted by deforestation, estimated as >80% over the past 60 years (within 3 generations - 90 years). Further extrapolation is difficult, and so this is used as a tentative minimum decline, although collecting may be contributing to declines too.

This species is threatened by severe deforestation, and it is also susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes.
