État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
Zamia montana is known from very few subpopulations (two subpopulations identified to date). Some demographic studies have been carried out for the species, that suggest that known subpopulations have small numbers of adults (less than 250 individuals). The total population size could be less that 500 adults. It is somewhat possible that the species has more subpopulations (although several field trips have been done in search of the species), therefore further research on population distribution and abundance is required.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
The two known subpopulations of the species occur in landscapes threatened with high deforestation rates, caused by agricultural and urban expansion, mostly forest destruction for cattle ranching and crops. The forest patches where subpopulations remain are small (less than 500 hectares) and they are degraded by human activities like logging.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Zamia montana is not present within protected areas. The subpopulations are present within a "National Forest Reserve", but the habitat is not effectively protected in the reserve. The species has ex situ collections in botanical gardens in Colombia (Medellin Garden), that include adult individuals recently rescued (year 2017) from one of the subpopulations where the forest is being destroyed. Urgent actions are required to improve population and habitat viability in the long term. The conservation action plan for Colombian Cycads has proposed specific actions for the species, however there is no species conservation strategy properly funded to this date.
