This species consists of an extensive colony with many old plants, as well as a thriving understorey of seedlings. However, although at least five subpopulations were recorded 10 years ago, two of those groups have now virtually disappeared as a result of forest clearing. Some of the others have declined due to trash dumping. There are probably other subpopulations in more remote locations.
There are three dense subpopulations containing between 250 and 400 adult plants each, and two smaller subpopulations of less than ten plants. Based on our survey, we estimate that there are approximately 980 adult plants of Zamia lucayana on Long Island (Calonje et al. 2011).
Zamia lucayana was described by N. L. Britton in 1907 based on a single individual collected in the Vicinity of Clarence Town, Long Island, The Bahamas. According to Britton (1907), only a single plant was found “after long search”. In 1974, S.R. Hill re-discovered this species, this time finding a dense population North of Turtle Cove, Long Island. This population, as well as two other large populations, were visited in 2009 by a team from the Bahamas National Trust (BNT, Lindy Knowles), the Montgomery Botanical Center (MBC, Michael Calonje), and Florida International University / Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (FIU-FTBG Javier Francisco-Ortega). We found all subpopulations to be more or less intact, and it appears that human activities in the area have not yet had a major negative effect in the distribution of this species. While the plants occur on prime oceanfront real estate and the habitat has been subdivided for sale, very few houses have been built and so far the impact on native Zamia lucayana subpopulations has been minimal. No evidence of considerable population reduction has been observed (Calonje et al. 2011, 2013).

Two out of the three photographed subpopulations are roadside subpopulations with easy public access; they are in danger of being eliminated through road expansion, shifting cultivation, and indiscriminate garbage dumping. Forest clearing also poses a threat.

Biologists from BNT, MBC, and FIU-FTBG were supported by The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and Montgomery Botanical Center to develop a project to evaluate the conservation status and provide conservation recommendations for Zamia lucayana. The project succeeded in mapping the distribution range, surveying the entire known population, gaining an understanding conservation threats, and disseminating this information to the local community on Long Island, as well as environmental and governmental organizations in Nassau. Local inhabitants in Long Island have been made aware of the importance and rarity of this species through presentations and outreach media. Detailed distribution data and conservation recommendations have been presented to The Bahamas Ministry of the Environment for use in environmental planning and zoning. Lastly, seeds of this species were collected throughout its entire geographical range and distributed to several botanic gardens for the purposes of ex situ preservation. (Calonje et al. 2011, 2013). Genetic characterization of the ex situ collections show that up to 94% of the in situ genetic diversity is now conserved ex situ (Griffith et al. 2015).
