Scattered subpopulations have been found over an area of ca. 1,600km2 where they typically occur close to rivers and streams. The two most intensively studied subpopulations of Zamia imperialis are both quite small in size, with one consisting of fewer than 100 plants and the other just over 100. Plants are typically widely dispersed and seedlings are uncommon because of limited coning events (Taylor et al. 2008).

Even though the smaller of the two subpopulations occurs within a national park, it is open to poaching and destruction. The greatest threat to these plants is habitat destruction, combined with the fact that indigenous people and settlers consider these plants thorny and cut them with machetes if they are in their way (Taylor et al. 2008).

Zamia imperialis is present in the Parque Nacional Omar Torrijos. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species. This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES
