The population size of Zamia herrerae has been estimated as at least 1,000, but this is probably an underestimate as it has a widespread distribution in areas that have been poorly surveyed.

People cut down the sub-deciduous tropical forest for corn cultivation and also for cattle production. The forests of Zamia herrerae have been transformed since the 1950's and 60's and are also exposed to forest fires every year, since in Mexico a cultivation technique called "slash, burn and burn" is used and many times the fires are out of control by burning primary forests.

This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. Plants are present in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
