Zamia hamannii occurs at a single locality although there are several small subpopulations dispersed across the island. Surveys in 2004 and 2017 (A. Taylor per. obs.) resulted in estimates of a total population size of between 700 and 1,000 plants including adults with pollen cones (males), receptive seed cones (females) and sterile specimens (either immature or not coning that year). Seedling regeneration is prevalent in the humus soil but uncommon in the sandy areas. No seed dispersal agents are yet confirmed and the majority of seedlings were observed growing directly under or within 1 m of the mother plants (Taylor et al. 2008).

There seems to be little interest in the plants by local inhabitants at this time and, because of the remoteness and relative inaccessibility of the population, there is no evidence of any plants having been poached for illegal trade. However, areas in the vicinity have been destroyed for resort developments and this is a real threat to the future survival of this species due to the extremely small extent of occurrence (Taylor et al. 2008).

The government of Panama is working with the indigenous population (Ngäbe-Buglé) to put in place rules for access to the area where the cycads occur. Zamia hamannii is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices.
