Zamia disodon is known from a few subpopulations (three subpopulations identified to date). A few demographic studies have been carried out for the species (years 2012 to 2017 in two localities, the third one has been impossible to visit for security reasons). These studies suggest that the known subpopulations have small numbers of adults (less than 250 individuals). It is possible that the species has more subpopulations (although field work has been carried out in many localities in the Uraba region without finding the species), therefore further research on population distribution and abundance is required. The total population size is likely to be less than 1,000 adults.

All subpopulations of the species occur in landscapes threatened with high deforestation rates, caused by agricultural and urban expansion, mostly forest destruction for cattle ranching and crops. The forest patches where subpopulations remain are very small (less than 100 hectares) and they are degraded by human activities like logging and hunting. None of the subpopulations occur within protected areas, and the habitat is highly threatened and could disappear in the next decades.

Some conservation actions have been intended for the species, as it is listed on a threatened-species resolution in Colombia and in CITES Appendix II, therefore Colombian environmental authorities are required to prevent and mitigate negative impacts of human activities on this threatened species and to regulate its international commerce. In addition, Colombia launched in 2015 a conservation action plan for Cycads, and in the last few years the “Colombian Cycad Society” has been working to promote population and habitat protection and restoration of small populations for Zamia species in the country, complemented with conservation actions related to research, monitoring, communication and education, among others.

Two subpopulations are within local reserves managed by the regional environmental authority (Corpuraba), but the species is not effectively protected in these reserves. The species has no representation in ex situ collections in botanical gardens in Colombia, and has proven to be difficult to propagate ex situ. A restoration programme has been going for the species since the year 2013, where seedlings are produced at greenhouses near to the original forest habitat and juveniles plants are reintroduced to supplement the local populations. Further actions are required urgently to improve population and habitat viability in the long term. The conservation action plan for Colombian Cycads has proposed specific conservation actions for the species, and there is a species conservation strategy, but the strategy still requires to secure funding for the long term.
