Nine subpopulations have been observed, all small. The largest subpopulations of Zamia decumbens were found inside two steep-walled sinkholes in Toledo district, each approximately 50–80 m wide and 30–60 m in depth, with approximately 150 large plants of reproductive age. The mountaintop and ridge subpopulations observed to date have been much smaller, with all having fewer than 15 plants (Calonje et al. 2009; P. Griffith pers. obs.).
A total of approximately 250 total adult-sized plants (defined as having 14 or more leaflet pairs per leaf) were counted in a survey of the two sinkhole subpopulations conducted in November 2010. These were re-visited in February 2014, and these subpopulations appear stable. Very few adult-sized plants have been observed in the much smaller mountain top subpopulations, and these show some evidence of past plant removal. Based on the subpopulations visited to date, we estimate the total population size of adult plants to be less than 450 individuals, and based on the evidence of potential removal of plants a population decline is precautionarily inferred.

Discussion with local residents throughout the range of Zamia decumbens confirms that plants of this species have been extracted commercially in the past and seeds continue to be extracted for commercial purposes. During fieldwork in the sinkholes, evidence was found of past mechanical removal of megasporangiate strobili, and a seemingly low number of seedling and young plants, perhaps suggesting that continued harvesting of seeds may be affecting the health of these subpopulations (Calonje et al. 2009). Mature plants have been removed form the wild in past years (P. Griffith pers. obs.).

This species is listed in CITES Appendix II. Zamia decumbens is currently being cultivated in the ex situ conservation collections of Belize Botanic Gardens, Green Hills Botanical Garden, and Montgomery Botanical Center. Active propagation of this species is critical in order to make it widely available to horticulture and deter illegal harvesting from wild subpopulations for the horticultural trade. Plants within the sinkhole subpopulations have been surveyed and labelled so that they can be monitored in the long term. Population genetic research (Griffith et al. 2015) suggests that ex situ collections of over 200 individuals can capture nearly 80% of in situ alleles.
