This species is locally common around areas such as El Llano to Carti road and in Kuna Yala. The population size is estimated to be at least 10,000 plants.

Zamia cunaria is mainly affected by habitat loss due to logging and clearing of the rainforest. As with most species within this genus, it is also susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes.
