Zamia acuminata subpopulations in the wild consist of least 5,000 plants. The subpopulation at El Valle comprises approximately 1,000 plants concentrated in a fairly small area. The status of other subpopulations is not well known.

This species has been affected by habitat destruction, which is a common problem within the distribution range. Habitat destruction has been estimated to be less than 30%. Additionally, as with most cycads, the species is likely to be collected for horticultural use, although wild collecting for this species is not well documented.

This species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. The species is known from at least 10 subpopulations, more than half of which occur within protected areas and none that seem severely affected by deforestation or other threats (Lindström et al. 2013). An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
