Xyris diaphanobracteata

The type collection was made in 1975, along the highway from Brasilia to Goiás. In June 2003, a large amount of land had been transformed for agricultural purposes less than 10 km south of where the collection was made, and all along the highway forest has been cleared for agriculture (Google Earth imagery examined on 24th February 2009). It is estimated that 60% of the original Cerrado Ecoregion has been converted or modified. In contrast, only 1% of the total area is protected in parks or reserves. The presence of the road and the proximity of the city of Alto Paraíso de Goiás (7 km north) represent major threats, causing the decline in habitat quality for the type location for X. diaphanobracteata.

The collection was made on the edge of The Cerrado Protected Areas, which include the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and Emas National Park. This Protected Area was established in 2001, its current status is unknown and its management effectiveness has not been assessed. Although taxonomic studies have been made for a large number of Brazilian Xyris and there are some Brazilian authors specialized in this genus, no studies were found for this species, this could be indicating that it is not a common widespread plant. More collections need to be made to fully understand the habitat preferences and conservation status of the taxon and to verify that this species is not already extinct.
