No quantitative population data are available for this species, but it is recorded as "locally abundant on rocks and on shallow rocky soil on grassland from about 2000 m to 2300 m" on the Lichenya Plateau of Mt Mulanje (Brass 16796, 1946) and it is widespread on that massif (Strugnell 2006). On the single known collection from Namuli (Timberlake 5163), it was recorded as rare. The population is inferred to be stable at present.

Although scarce on Mt Namuli, this species is unlikely to be threatened there. The grasslands of this massif do get burnt, but this species is restricted to steep rocky slopes which will burn less frequently, and this species also appears to be tolerant of some burning.  Historically, there were feral / domestic pigs roaming free on the mountain that damaged some of the fragile habitats on shallow soils (Timberlake et al. 2009). However, these pigs have since been largely removed as potatoes are now the main crop cultivated on the lower slopes of the mountain and pigs are too damaging to potato farming (Legado pers. obs.).

Harris et al. (2011) suggested that there may be a threat of excessive fires on Mulanje, but again this species' habitat may be at least partially protected from severe fire damage and this species is likely to tolerate moderate burning. Parts of Mt Mulanje (principally the Lichenya Plateau) have been proposed for bauxite mining for several decades (see, for example, http://sdnp.org.mw/geosoc-mw/mulanje-bauxite.htm), but mining has not yet commenced and plans are currently suspended. If this were to go ahead in the future, this would certainly impact a significant portion of the subpopulation on Mt Mulanje, but it is not currently considered an imminent threat. At present, therefore, this species is not considered to be threatened.

No specific conservation measures or management plan are in place for this species. The localities on Mt Mulanje are all within the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve / Biosphere Reserve and so are afforded some protection; Mt Namuli is not currently a protected area.
