No quantitative population data are available for this species. Unlike some Xerophyta species, it does not appear to be abundant in suitable habitat, but it was found to be fairly frequent at Ribáuè in 2017 (I. Darbyshire pers. obs.). In the easternmost site in Erati District, it was found to be localised with c. 20 individuals seen in one small area, but a full populations survey was not conducted (J. Burrows pers. comm.). Although currently known from only seven sites, it is likely to be present, at least at low abundance, on many of the granite inselbergs that are common within this species' range, many of which have not been well botanised (J. Burrows pers. obs.). The population trend is unknown.

Threats to this species' habitat are rather minimal as the granite slopes and slabs on which it occurs are of no agricultural value and experience only limited disturbance. It was noted to be undisturbed at sites near Nampula and Alua (J. Burrows pers. obs.). There was evidence of widespread burning on the slopes of the Ribáuè Mountains to clear the surrounding forests and woodlands (I. Darbyshire pers. obs.), but this is unlikely to impact negatively on this species and, in fact, some Xerophyta species benefit from fire which can promote flowering (J. Burrows pers. obs.). The only other plausible threat is from use of this species by man, as has been observed in other Xerophyta species which are occasionally used as brooms or brushes (J. Burrows pers. obs.) or as a source of fuelwood, but there is no evidence that this species is used in such ways and given the small stature of this species, it seems unlikely.

No specific conservation measures or management plan are in place for this species. Only one of the known subpopulations occurs within a protected area, that of the Ribáuè Forest Reserve (Protected Planet 2018), but the natural habitats at that site are not well managed or conserved at present.
