This species is known from 10 collections and 26 sight records. Mapaura (2002) recorded it as widespread within the Chimanimani Mountains. A population survey was conducted in 2016 in the Mozambican Chimanimani mountains, using a random stratified sampling method. Twenty quadrants were sampled in two 50 x 50 m macro plots. The total number of individuals was 72, with 52 mature individuals and 20 recruitment stage. Xerophyta argentea populations were observed as abundant (Shah 2016). The population data cannot be accurately extrapolated for the wider massif due to the lack of reliable absence data, but there are likely to be >10,000 individuals. The data collected in this survey provides a framework for monitoring number of individuals in the future.
All collections to date are from the north of Chimanimani but it may in fact be more widespread across the massif.

Increased frequency of fire may be a threat to some areas of its habitat, however Xerophyta argentea is fire adapted and thus not likely to be significantly impacted by this threat.

No specific conservation measures or management plan are in place for this species. It is recorded from the Chimanimani National Park in Zimbabwe and the Chimanimani National Reserve in Mozambique. Only the northernmost site, near Rotanda, is not within a protected area. Populations of Xerophyta argentea should be monitored, particularly in the accessible areas of the Chimanimani.
