État de la populationExpert
There are at least 13 sites where V. mengtzeanum  has been collected, represented by 26 herbarium specimens. Additional herbarium specimens have been observed within the same provinces as the georeferenced specimens used in the assessment, but it has been impossible to determine their exact localities. The overall population size is not known.

Chinese collections are generally old (1882 – 1939), and the most recent one was collected in 1973. No recent observations have been recorded, and the current status of these populations is unknown. Thai collections are more recent and they have been collected from only two sites: Doi Chiangdao and Phu Wae. There is a disjunction between the Chinese and Thai subpopulations. This species may occur in intermediate localities in Lao PDR and Myanmar, although a member of the editorial board of the Flore du Cambodge, Laos et Viêtnam confirmed that this taxon has not yet been recorded for these countries (M. Newman pers. comm.). There is also a disjunction between the Thai subpopulations of the two subspecies.

Description complète des menacesExpert
There are no known major threats to this species. At the subspecific level there is a plausible future threat to V. mengtzeanum ssp. phuwae from limestone extraction if the protected status of the locality is removed, but this only represents a small proportion of the overall range of the species.
