The population is estimated at 2,500–3,000, with a best estimate of 2,500. Based on regular estimates of subpopulations, extreme fluctuations in flowering individuals (over one order of magnitude) have been observed across all subpopulations due to changing rainfall patterns from year to year, likely linked to climate change. The current population trend is unknown.

This species is threatened by livestock overgrazing which is leading to declining quality of large areas of habitat (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). Habitat loss is also occurring across areas of this species range due to mining and the development of quarries. Currently, this is not directly affecting known subpopulations, but is impacting the habitat of this species and if these activities expand in the future it could lead to rapid declines in mature individual numbers. This species is also threatened by climate change which is predicted to cause large losses in the extent of tulip habitat across Central Asia as well as forcing subpopulations of some species to move to new areas. This species is especially prone to this threat as it inhabits an extremely arid area where rainfall directly affects the number of flowering individuals each year. Observations already confirm extreme fluctuations in flowering numbers of over one order of magnitude from year to year due to changing rainfall patterns. Opportunistic collection of flowering specimens may also lead to declines but current information suggests that this activity is not on a large scale.

This species is already recognised as Endangered in Uzbekistan (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). It is not thought to occur in any protected areas or ex situ collections (BGCI 2022). It was present in Tashkent botanic garden in Uzbekistan, however this specimen did not survive.
