This species is very common with its population estimated to be extremely large at between 300,000 and 500,000 mature individuals. There are estimated to be around 100,000-200,000 flowering individuals in Tajikistan, more than 100,000 in Uzbekistan, just under 100,000 in Kyrgyzstan, and more than 10,000 in Kazakhstan. The population in Turkmenistan is unknown. The overall population is believed to be relatively stable although some subpopulations may be in decline due to localised threats (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015).

For many subpopulations there are no threats, but for some subpopulations livestock overgrazing is a threat (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015, Nowak et al. 2020), and is causing declines in habitat quality and mature individuals. Nonetheless this threat is only affecting the minority of subpopulations with many subpopulations growing in remote areas where there are no threats occurring. In addition, climate change may pose a threat to this species with projections suggesting large areas of this species habitat will disappear in the future (Wilson et al. 2021). However, this threat is difficult to predict and will need to be monitored carefully.

This species is nationally red listed in Uzbekistan as Least Concern (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015), but has not been evaluated in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan or Tajikistan likely because it is common. This species is known to occur in many protected areas including, but not exclusively, Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve, the Sayram-Ugam National Park, and Boralday State Nature Sanctuary in Kazakhstan, and the Ugam-Chatkal National Park and Zaamin National Park in Uzbekistan. This species is known from 90 ex situ collections (BGCI 2022). This species may require translocation efforts as rapid habitat shifts may occur due to climate change (Wilson et al. 2021).
