There are an estimated 10,000 mature individuals in Kazakhstan, whilst fewer than 10,000 flowering individuals are known from Kyrgyzstan. This species was only recently recognised in Kyrgyzstan, but the subpopulations in this area appear stable, whilst the population trend in Kazakhstan is not well recorded meaning the overall population trend is unknown. Subpopulation densities in Kazakhstan are low.

Livestock overgrazing is the primary threat to this species, as this species commonly grows in areas used as pasture land including track areas where large numbers of livestock are moved along. Nonetheless much of its range is not greatly impacted by this threat. Climate change may also impact this species as it is predicted to impact mountain areas more than most other ecosystems and projections show that suitable tulip habitat across Central Asia will dramatically decline in extent, which will also lead to shifting habitat suitability and declines in subpopulations, both from an inability of the species to track its' climatic niche as well as changing environmental triggers (Wilson et al. 2021). However, the impact on this species remains unclear.

This species is reported as Threatened in Kazakhstan (Baitulin 2014), but remains unassessed in Kyrgyzstan. The species occurs in and around the Chong-Kemin National Park in Kyrgyzstan as well as the Altyn-Emel National Park and Zhongar-Alatau National Park in Kazakhstan. There are also plans to create two new protected areas in Kazakhstan that will cover parts of this species range. Overall 20% of the Kazakh range of this species will be protected across all these areas. The species is in at least two ex-situ collections (BGCI 2022).
