The primary threat to this species is livestock overgrazing, which is both causing declines in habitat quality as well as mature individual numbers. This species is known from many areas that are used as pastureland by livestock farmers. Trampling and indirect damage is the primary cause of declines with direct grazing rare, although goats have been seen eating tulips. Climate change may also be a threat to this species with projections suggesting that large areas of tulip habitat will become unsuitable in the future (Wilson et al. 2021), however the direct impact on this species is uncertain. In addition, urbanization may be causing declines in habitat area of this species as towns in the Talas region grow in size, however there is limited information to confirm this.

This species is not nationally Red Listed in Kyrgyzstan and is not known from any protected areas in this country. In general, therefore, it lacks any formal protection. This species is known from two ex situ (BGCI 2022) collections as well as the Gareev Botanic Garden tulip collection in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
