The population of this species is known to be less than 10,000 individuals with each subpopulation having no more than 300-500 mature plants. Overall the population is thought to be in decline due to ongoing threats from livestock overgrazing, urbanisation, agricultural land expansion and ploughing. Climate change may also impact population numbers but its impact is difficult to predict.

This species is extremely vulnerable to livestock overgrazing, which is already causing extensive degradation of this plants habitat (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). This habitat is in the lower and middle areas of the Tien-Shan Mountains on the edge of the Fergana Valley where large populations of livestock are grazed on the sparse grassland (Dekhkonov et al. 2021). In addition, parts of this species habitat is agricultural land, which is expanding and ongoing threats from ploughing is further leading to habitat degradation and population decline.
Urbanisation in the eastern part of this species range is leading to loss of subpopulations and habitat. These threats together are also leading to increased fragmentation of habitat and subpopulations.
This species is also likely threatened by climate change, which is projected to cause large areas of tulip habitat to decline in extent as well as lead to the forced relocation of subpopulations of some species due to weather pattern changes (Wilson et al. 2021), however the specific impact on this species is unknown.

This species is reported as Endangered in the Uzbek Red Book (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). It is not known to occur in any protected area (Abduraimov et al. 2020, Dekhkonov et al. 2021). This species is not currently reported from any ex-situ collections. Protection of this species habitat will be crucial for its survival.
