This species has a large overall population with around 100,000 mature individuals thought to occur in Kazakhstan and at least 10,000 in Kyrgyzstan. There is generally very limited information on the size of subpopulations, but in general the population is declining, especially across Kazakhstan. This is due to a range of ongoing threats that have caused historical declines, but still have not ceased. Around 30% of the Kazakh population is believed to have disappeared in the last 50-60 years, whilst in Kyrgyzstan 10% of the population has also been estimated to have disappeared in the last 10-20 years. Overall there has therefore been a past decline of around 29% over the last three generations (54 years) across the entire range.

This species is threatened by urbanisation, construction of recreational infrastructure, and collection and trade in Kazakhstan. It is particularly vulnerable around the city of Almaty where new ski resorts and infrastructure is being developed and people often collect the red forms of this plant to sell. In Kyrgyzstan the primary threat is from mining, especially clay, gravel, and sand pits, whilst collection and infrastructure development also pose a threat (Davletkeldiev 2006). Subpopulations in the mountains around Bishkek are the most vulnerable as this is where mining activity is greatest and where collection is also a problem. Climate change may pose a threat to this species with projections suggesting large areas of tulip habitat will become unsuitable in the future (Wilson et al. 2021), however the direct impact on this species is uncertain.

This species is nationally red listed as Vulnerable in Kyrgyzstan (Davletkeldiev 2006) and recognised as Threatened in Kazakhstan (Baitulin 2014). The species is known to occur in two protected areas, the Ile-Alatau National Park and Almaty National Reserve in Kazakhstan. It does not occur in any protected areas in Kyrgyzstan, although a subpopulation is known to be growing just outside the Besh-Tash Nature Park. The species is reported to occur in 12 ex situ collections (BGCI 2022) and was recently added to the collections of the Gareev Botanical Garden in Bishkek.
