This species grows very densely with 5,000-6,000 flowering individuals known and up to around 12,000-15,000 when immature individuals are counted. A historical population decline occurred in this species around 100 years ago, but the population is now thought to be stable.

Historically this species declined with many subpopulations lost from steppe areas due to agricultural land expansion, ploughing, and overgrazing estimated to have occurred around 100 years ago. Since this period, subpopulations have only persisted in the canyons of the area and these and their habitat appear stable. Regardless, these areas may be under threat from changes in rainfall patterns due to climate change (Wilson et al. 2021), recreational activities of tourists, and development of new infrastructure in the area, and some livestock overgrazing.

Its conservation status has not been formally assessed in Kazakhstan (Baitulin 2014). There is currently no conservation action in place to protect this species. This species does not occur within a protected area, but is in the ex situ collections of J.J. de Groot and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands as well as in one botanic garden on the BGCI PlantSearch database.
