The overall population is estimated to be less than 10,000 mature individuals. Generally there are around 100 flowering individuals in each subpopulation, but there could be up to around 1,000 mature individuals. In some subpopulations density of this species can be up to 15 plants per square metre, however in more damaged areas it can be as low as one plant per square metre. Notably, it is more rare in these areas than Tulipa ferganica that can be found growing in the same habitat. Known subpopulations exist within the same valley region and are therefore not severely fragmented. One subpopulation occurs on sacred land, which may offer it some protection. Overall the number of individuals of this species is thought to be declining across the majority of subpopulations with a suspected decline of between 10 to 20% of the overall population likely within 30 years or three generations.

The main threats to this species are livestock overgrazing and mining activities. The majority of this species habitat is used as grazing areas for livestock and this is leading to habitat degradation as well as damage to plants through trampling and grazing, especially by goats. Livestock numbers are thought to be increasing across much of Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan and therefore this threat is likely to escalate in future years (Borchardt and Dorre 2012). In addition, in parts of the range of this species, specifically around Kurpsay, extensive gold and coal mining activities are ongoing, which is both leading to habitat loss and degradation and declines in at least one subpopulation. Climate change may also pose a threat to this species with projections suggesting large areas of suitable habitat will disappear for a range of tulip species (Wilson et al. 2021). However, due to limited location data for this species, projections were not possible and so the impact of climate change on this species remains uncertain.

This species was described in 2015 (Zonneveld 2015) and currently is not recognised on the national red list of Kyrgyzstan and is not reported to occur in any protected areas. This species is rarely found in ex situ collections with it recorded from only a single collection on BGCI's PlantSearch tool (BGCI 2022), although it was recently added to the collection at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Gareev Botanical Garden in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This species may require translocation efforts as rapid habitat shifts will occur as the impacts of climate change increase (Wilson et al. 2021). In addition, control of livestock grazing during flowering time will be important either through improved management schemes, providing hay to farmers during this time as an alternative food source for livestock, or by fencing areas of important tulip habitat to prevent grazing, although this would need to be enforced. Moreover, a protected area should be established in Beke Chal where there is a forestry unit and an important subpopulation of this species exists.
