There are limited subpopulation records for this species, however a number have been reported across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China. The overall population number is large with over 100,000 mature individuals known from Kazakhstan with around 40% of these flowering at one time. The overall population is believed to be stable, although some subpopulations may be declining due to ongoing threats. A single subpopulation can have up to around 250 individuals with density varying. In Kyrgyzstan some subpopulations are reported as growing with up to 5-6 individuals within a square metre, whilst in others the plant is much scarcer with only 1-2 individuals growing within a square metre. In Kazakhstan subpopulations are known where 20-40 individuals are growing in a square metre.

The primary threats to this species are from habitat loss due to expansion of agricultural land and changes in habitat suitability due to the impacts of climate change. In some areas land use change is occurring that is leading to the loss of habitat of this species, however this is on a small scale. In addition, climate modelling projections suggest that large areas of this species' alpine habitat will become unsuitable in the future (Wilson et al. 2021). The habitat of this species may therefore decline in area as weather patterns change over time and in some areas subpopulations may be forced to higher altitudes due to shifting habitat.

This species is currently reported as Least Concern on the Chinese Red List (Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (MEP and CAS) 2014), and is not assessed in either Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan because it is common. The species occurs in five protected areas, Ile-Alatau National Park, Kolsay lakes National Park, and Almaty National Reserve in Kazakhstan as well as Chong-Kemin National Park and Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve in Kyrgyzstan. This species is found in six ex situ collections (BGCI 2022) including Gothenburg Botanical Garden, but is difficult to grow. Translocation of this species may be required as the impacts of climate change worsen and cause rapid shifts in habitat (Wilson et al. 2021).
