The overall population of this species is extremely large with an estimated 100,000 mature individuals in Kyrgyzstan and over 1,000,000 in Kazakhstan. Estimates of the population size of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have not been made. There is a fairly unique subpopulation near Berkara in Kazakhstan that has yellow, orange, red, and white flowering forms of this species whereas most subpopulations have only one or sometimes two colour forms. This species is Nationally Red Listed in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan where subpopulations have been identified as under threat, but in general the population is believed to be stable partially aided by legal protection for this species by its presence in these red books (Davletkeldiev 2006, Baitulin 2014, Tojibaev and Beshko 2015, Hisoriev et al. 2016).

There are a broad range of threats to this species but the most widespread threat is livestock overgrazing, which is causing large areas of habitat of this species to decline in quality (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015, Nowak et al. 2020). At specific sites in the mountains mining activities, specifically for gold and coal, are damaging subpopulations, and this is the largest threat to this species in Kyrgyzstan (Davletkeldiev 2006). Around large cities, particularly Bishkek, Shymkent, Taraz, and Tashkent, continued expansion and construction works on habitat areas are leading to losses of subpopulations. Conversion of land to agricultural fields, for example conversion of land to wheat fields in the Karatau mountains in Kazakhstan, and the subsequent ploughing of fields are also causing loss of habitat and damage to subpopulations in areas across the range of this species as well.

Disturbance from tourism as well as the collection and trade of this flowering plant is also a threat to subpopulations. Currently trade is very small as there are large fines in place against picking this species across most of its range, but collection still occurs and historically there was a much larger trade when these fines were not in place. Finally, climate change is projected to cause large losses of suitable habitat of this species and therefore may lead to the loss of subpopulations if they cannot shift fast enough to track suitable habitat areas (Wilson et al. 2021). Although the impact of climate change is fairly uncertain, it should be monitored closely.

This species is nationally red listed as Vulnerable in Tajikistan (Nowak et al. 2020) and Uzbekistan (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015) and as Endangered in Kyrgyzstan (Davletkeldiev 2006), whilst it is reported as Threatened in Kazakhstan (Baitulin 2014). Its presence in the red books of these countries provides significant protection, but also highlights that historically there have been declines. This species is known to occur in the Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve and Berkara Reserve in Kazakhstan, as well as the Ugam-Chatkal National Park in Uzbekistan. It also occurs in the Red Hill Reserve established in Kazakhstan in 1977 to specifically protect a large subpopulation of red flowering Tulipa greigii. In addition, this species is known from 31 ex situ collections (BGCI 2022) including the Gareev Botanical Garden in Bishkek, Tashkent Botanical Garden, as well as at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Cambridge University Botanic Gardens.

This species is of particular cultural and horticultural importance and is particularly genetically and morphologically diverse which will require focused conservation efforts to maintain with particular focus on subpopulations on the edge of the main range of specific interest. There is a need to extend protected areas, especially in Kazakhstan, to urban suburbs to protect this species and this species may require translocation efforts in the future as habitat shifts under climate change may be too rapid for natural migration. Finally, mining activities must be halted in areas where important subpopulations grow and increased education efforts are needed to raise awareness of this species vulnerability to threats with a particular focus on school children likely to be the most effective method.
