The overall population size of this species is large and certainly over 10,000 mature individuals. In Kyrgyzstan there are estimated to be between 100,000 and 1,000,000 flowering individuals, in Uzbekistan there are around 10,000, and in Tajikistan there are likely around 1,000. Some of these subpopulations are likely declining due to ongoing threats from livestock overgrazing and mining, but in general the population is stable. Known subpopulations are not severely fragmented.

The primary threats to this species are livestock overgrazing and climate change. Damage from trampling, grazing, and soil erosion is common in some areas where this species grows as these are used as pastureland (Davletkeldiev 2006, Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). Populations of livestock are increasing across the range of this species and so it is predicted this threat will increase heading into the future. A further threat comes from climate change which will likely change the weather patterns across the middle mountain areas that this species occurs in. Modelling suggests this species will lose large tracts of suitable habitat due to the impacts of climate change and subpopulations may be forced to shift to higher altitudes (Wilson et al. 2021). Expansion of infrastructure and agricultural land also poses a threat to this species as some subpopulations occur in foothills near to the fertile areas of the Fergana Valley albeit this affects only a very small proportion of the population. Finally, opportunistic collection of this species does occur, but currently on such a small scale that this is not impacted subpopulation sizes.

There is currently no in-place research, monitoring or management of this species, but the population is large and stable. This species is nationally red listed as Vulnerable in Uzbekistan (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). This species occurs in the Dashman Nature Reserve and is also thought to grow in the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve, both in Kyrgyzstan. This species is known from 19 ex situ collections (BGCI 2022).
