This species is common in Uzbekistan with around 100,000 mature individuals known, whilst it is rare in Kyrgyzstan where less than 2,000 flowering individuals are known and in Tajikistan where only one subpopulation of between 100 and 200 mature individuals has been found. An estimate for Kazakhstan is not possible at the moment. In general, subpopulations are not dense with between 100 to 200 mature individuals occurring in each. The overall population is believed to be declining due to ongoing threats (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015).

There are a broad range of threats to this species that differ across its distribution. In Kyrgyzstan the primary threats are from gold mining and livestock overgrazing which are leading to small declines in most subpopulations with some close to mining areas declining rapidly (Davletkeldiev 2006). In Uzbekistan this plant is opportunistically collected including its bulb, whilst the development of ski resorts in the Chatkal mountains in areas of this tulip's habitat is leading to habitat loss, degradation, and declines in mature individuals (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). In Tajikistan, the only known subpopulation is threatened by livestock overgrazing which is leading to declines. In Kazakhstan there are no significant threats as subpopulations are either in protected areas or at high elevation where people and livestock do not often go. This species may also be threatened by the affects of climate change as this species occurs in alpine areas which are thought be more acutely affected by a changing climate and where the range of many tulips species has been projected to decrease in the coming decades (Wilson et al. 2021). However, the direct impact of this threat on this species is unknown.

Currently there is no in-place research, management or monitoring of this species. This species is nationally red listed as Vulnerable in Uzbekistan (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015), although remains not evaluated in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. This species is known to occur in the Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve in Kazakhstan and the Ugam-Chatkal National Park in Uzbekistan, and likely occurs in a State Reserve in Kyrgyzstan. The species is known from five botanic garden collections (BGCI 2022) including the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.
