There is extremely limited information about wild subpopulations of this species as it has been primarily described from material grown in cultivation; it has only been observed in one or two areas in the wild where bulbs were collected. This species is likely in decline due to habitat degradation from livestock overgrazing (Mirzabaev et al. 2016), but may also be threatened by changing rainfall and temperature patterns due to climate change (Wilson et al. 2021), although the impact of this threat remains uncertain. The known subpopulations are severely fragmented, although there may be unrecorded subpopulations connecting currently recorded locations.

There is likely some habitat degradation occurring in this species’ estimated range due to grazing practices and this is likely the most imminent threat to this species. However climate change likely also poses a threat to this species given its restricted range; subpopulations may be forced to shift or require translocation in the future as climate leads to shifting habitat (Wilson et al. 2021). There is currently no evidence that opportunistic collection, urbanisation, or mining threatens this species. The human population in the area of this tulip is small and so there is likely very little threat from disturbance or urbanisation (Iegorova et al. 2019).

This species was described in 2020 and so has only been recognised extremely recently (de Groot and Zonneveld 2020). It is only known from very few locations in the Altai mountains, one being the type location in Kazakhstan and the other in the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in Mongolia. Only a few specimens have been collected and grown in ex situ collections. These plants are in the collections of J.J. de Groot and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands.
