In Uzbekistan fewer than 1,000 mature individuals are known whilst in Kazakhstan, where the majority of this species range occurs, between 10,000 and 20,000 mature individuals are known. In Uzbekistan subpopulations are between 100 to 300 individuals in size whilst in Kazakhstan it is estimated at 100 to 200 individuals in subpopulations in Kyzylkul. This species does not grow in large subpopulations, but many small subpopulations are known.

This species is threatened by livestock grazing across much of its range with the shrubland and desert habitat of this species becoming increasingly overgrazed (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). Climate change is also likely to impact this species with increasing aridity expected across its habitat leading to desertification and more common droughts and extreme weather events for example sand storms. This may lead to rapid declines in population size as well as large areas of this species habitat becoming unsuitable (Wilson et al. 2021). This plant is opportunistically collected by local people and tourists near settlements although no established trade is in place. Mining is also threatening some subpopulations especially in the Zerafshan mountains of Uzbekistan and areas of high oil and gas extraction in Kazakhstan. In addition, mining of sand is also an acute problem in subpopulations in the south of Uzbekistan near the border with Tajikistan which are already small in size. In some areas of Uzbekistan construction of wind turbines is leading to habitat loss. Finally natural system modifications through flooding near certain lakes where water levels are sporadic due to management may also lead to the loss of subpopulations and habitat area. There is a projected decline of around 4% of area of occupancy and 5% of extent of occurrence due to habitat loss in Uzbekistan

This species is recorded as Threatened in the Red Book of Kazakhstan (Baitulin 2014), whilst it is recorded as Data Deficient in Uzbekistan (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). This species is known to occur in the Barsa-Kelmes Nature Reserve in Kazakhstan, although this is the only protected area it occurs in and this is only a small part of its range. This species is represented in two ex situ collections (BGCI 2022).
