Given current data it is likely there are more than 100,000 mature individuals across the entire range. In Kyrgyzstan there are between 10,000 and 100,000 mature individuals, in Tajikistan there are between 40,000 and 50,000, In Kazakhstan there are about 50,000, and in Uzbekistan over 100,000 mature individuals are known. Regardless of this large overall population some known subpopulations, especially in Kyrgyzstan, are small with fewer than <50 individuals in some areas. The subpopulations of this species appear not to be isolated or severely fragmented, especially in areas of Uzbekistan where extensive surveys have been undertaken. The population is thought to be declining in its lower elevations between 800-1,500 m but above 2,000 m the population is stable with the entirety of its Kazakh population generally believed to be stable regardless of elevation.

Livestock overgrazing is the primary threat to this species in Tajikistan and is likely also occurring in some areas of tulip habitat across the other countries in this species' range (Borchardt and Dorre 2012, Nowak et al. 2020). In Uzbekistan opportunistic collection of flowers is known but occurs rarely, whilst some subpopulations are impacted by construction of infrastructure to support tourism, especially near Tashkent city (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015).

In Kyrgyzstan the primary threat in the mountains is mining, although mining may also be a threat in some other parts of the range outside of Kyrgyzstan it is here causing the most acute problems. Overall these threats occur at the lower elevations that this species can occur at with many higher altitude subpopulations not impacted by any threats. 
Climate change may also pose a threat as large areas of currently suitable tulip habitat is predicted to become unsuitable in the near future due to the impacts of climate change (Wilson et al. 2021) and the effects of climate change are widely accepted to be more acute in alpine areas leading to distribution shifts and population declines (Rangwala and Miller 2012). This species is predicted to lose habitat but more suitable habitat may become available in protected areas as climate change proceeds. In Kazakhstan there are no threats reported for this species, although climate change could impact subpopulations here.

There is currently no in-place research or monitoring for this species. This species is nationally red listed as Endangered and Near Threatened in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan respectively. Around 80% of the Uzbek and Kazakh parts of the population occur in protected areas including the Chatkal Biosphere Reserve and the Ugam-Chatkal National Park in Uzbekistan and the Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve and Sairam-Ugam National Park in Kazakhstan. It does not occur in any protected areas of Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan. It is known from 19 ex situ collections. There is a need to formally assess the legitimacy of records of this species in the Pamir-Alay mountains and to update databases based on the outcome.
