The overall population of this species is estimated to be between 5,000 and 12,000 mature individuals with a best estimate of around 8,000, based on counts of subpopulations with the largest subpopulation estimated to be around 1,000 mature individuals. In Tajikistan, there are approximately 5,000–10,000 flowering individuals under the synonym name Tulipa korshinskyi (Christenhusz et al. 2013) and around 1,000 under the name Tulipa anisophylla. In Uzbekistan there are an estimated 100–200 mature individuals and certainly no more than 1,000, all reported under the name Tulipa korshinskyi (Christenhusz et al. 2013, Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). There are a range of threats, primarily mining activities and infrastructure development, that have caused historical declines and continue to cause declines in mature individuals especially in the Darvoz region. These threats are unlikely to cease and it is projected that the overall population will decline by 5-10%, with 10% the best estimate, in the next three generations due to these threats. In Darvoz the declines will be greater with 10-15% of the population in this region disappearing in three generations. Subpopulations at higher elevations are under less threat than those in lower areas. In Uzbekistan only a single subpopulation has historically been recorded, however there is no current information to confirm this subpopulation still exists and therefore its actual presence in Uzbekistan is uncertain.

There are a number of threats to this species, which are primarily impacting lower elevation subpopulations with higher habitat areas much less threatened. Livestock overgrazing and damage from livestock moving along trails through subpopulations is leading to both declines in habitat quality as well as damage to some mature individuals (Nowak et al. 2020). This is the primary threat to subpopulations in the northern parts of this species range. In addition, there is a significant threat from mining, especially in the Darvoz region, where there is considerable marble mining activity which is known to be causing population declines. There is also a threat from infrastructure development again primarily around the Darvoz region, but this is also occurring across a broader range. Climate change may also impact this species with projections suggesting large areas of tulip habitat will become unsuitable in the future (Wilson et al. 2021), but the direct impact on this species is uncertain. This species is somewhat rare and therefore impacts are likely to be extremely damaging to remaining subpopulations and effects such as inbreeding depression through severe fragmentation may need to be considered.

This species has some taxonomic uncertainty associated with it, as currently Tulipa korshinksyi is formally a synonym (Christenhusz et al. 2013), however across its native range this continues to be treated as a separate species due to morphological differences with T. anisophylla. The synonym is genetically similar to its parent species, but there still remains an urgent need to resolve this taxonomic conflict. This species is reported as Critically Endangered in Tajikistan, with T. korshinskyi believed to be Near Threatened (Nowak et al. 2020). In Uzbekistan this species is assessed under T. korshinskyi as Data Deficient (Tojibaev and Beshko 2015). The species occurs in the Childukhtaron Reserve and the Sari-Khosor National Park in Tajikistan and the Hissar National Reserve in Uzbekistan and is known from four ex situ collections, counting records under T. korshinskyi, (BGCI 2022) and additionally from the Pamir Botanical Garden in Khorog.
