Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Since 1972, 13% of upper montane forests have been lost (Ash et al. 2009). The present trend for Nothofagus forest is to be reduced in area, through conversion to other land uses (Beehler and Marshall 2012). Being a large tree it is likely that this could be used as a timber species and if not used sustainably the species could go into sharp decline. It is said that some species of Nothofagus can resprout in secondary forest but where impacts are too destructive, it is unable to. In addition, seasonal fires are becoming more prevalent and beginning to occur in logged areas, especially in upland slopes where 4.4% of forest loss 1972-2002 has occurred (Ash et al. 2009). Given the abundance of the species across Papua New Guinea, and the size of the tree, the assumption can be made it is used as a timber species, yet it is unknown if it is harvested sustainably.
