Since this species is a pioneer, it thrives due to disturbance; such as fire, storms, landslides or drought. Unlike its close relatives, natural hazards such as these or even human induced fires (to an extent) can support the species. Since 1972, 13% of upper montane forests have been lost (Ash et al. 2009). The present trend for Nothofagus forest is to be reduced in area, through conversion to other land uses (Beehler and Marshall 2012). It seems to be used regularly as a timber; considering its large range and has the ability to quickly pioneer disturbed areas, it potentially makes a good candidate as a timber species. The natural disturbances of fire, drought, landslides and storms all play an integral part for the continuation of the species. Presently human activities are overruling natural disturbances which prevents the species from recovering as well as reducing the seed bank in the soil (Ketner and Valkenburg 2009). If human induced disturbances continue, the species could begin to decline.

This species has also been known to experience dieback in various areas of Papua (Veblen et al. 1996), this could be due to pathogenic soil fungi (Beehler and Marshall 2012). Beehler and Marshall (2012) states, that pathogenic soil fungi, including Phytopthora cinnamomiP. cambivora and wood boring beetles are associated with dieback of Nothofagus pullei on Mt Giluwe, but the causal relationship has not been fully established. Nothofagus pullei stands in south Papua (in the vicinity of Hidden Valley) have experienced some dieback of this type, but the cause has not been established. As the causes of the dieback have not been confirmed, it cannot be established that the native beetle and non-native diseases are affecting the stands.

According to BGCI Plant Search (2017), there are no ex situ collections of this species, it is recommended that these are made. Data collected on GBIF shows no subpopulations in national parks or reserves, yet considering its large estimated extent of occurrence, it is likely it falls in to protected areas.
