Description complète des menacesExpert

According to Ash et al. (2009), between 1972 and 2002, 15% of Papua New Guinea’s tropical forests were cleared, and 8.8% were degraded through logging. In addition, since 1972, 13% of upper montane forests have also been lost. The present trend for Nothofagus forest is to be reduced in area through conversion to other land uses (Beehler and Marshall 2012). Being a large tree, it is likely that it is used as a timber species; a use which is a potential threat to the species. Furthermore, seasonal fires are becoming more prevalent and beginning to occur in logged areas, especially in upland slopes where 4.4% of forest loss between 1972-2002 has occurred (Ash et al. 2009). According to a herbarium specimen collected in 1976 (Clunie and Katik 1976), a population was growing on the slopes of Mt. Giluwe in the Southern Highlands in an area known as 'Laro Logging Area'; this suggests that this species grows on upland slopes where it experiences logging as well as fire suppression.
