État de la populationExpert

The population is made up of six disjunct subpopulations separated up to 600 km between 1,500–2,500 m asl (Flora Malesiana 2017). The long distance in-between subpopulations suggests this species was potentially much more widespread (Veblen 1996).

Description complète des menacesExpert

According to Flora Malesiana (2017), a picture taken in 1938 in mature forests at Bele River West New Guinea, at 2,450 m, states that most undergrowth and trees were removed with notable charring at bases. Where logging occurs and disturbance is not too fierce, secondary forest and logged forests sometimes contain Nothofagus; however, where impacts are too destructive, grasslands and secondary forest may develop (Beehler and Marshall 2012). There is no current literature supporting any current felling or this species being used for timber. Seasonal fires are beginning to occur in logged areas, especially in upland areas. There was 4.4% forest loss between 1972-2002 (Ash et al. 2009). This could suggest that where this species occurs in upland areas it could be under threat. The present trend for Nothofagus forest is to be reduced in area, through conversion to other land uses (Beehler and Marshall 2012).
