The primary threat impacting Louisiana Trillium is habitat loss and degradation due to logging, silviculture, and urban sprawl (NatureServe 2019). Extensive tracts of suitable habitat have been converted to pine plantations resulting in contraction of the species' range. Conversion to silviculture continues and is likely to negatively impact the species into the foreseeable future. Disruption of fire regimes within the species’ range have been demonstrated to negatively impact herbaceous understory species frequency, though the specific impact on Louisiana Trillium has not been studied (Reeves 1970). Excessive herbivory due to overabundance of White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus), a threat observed in several other Trillium species (Augustine and Frelich 1998, Jenkins et al. 2007, Knight et al. 2009), is likely to also impact Louisiana Trillium. White-tailed Deer overabundance is common throughout the eastern United States (Russell et al. 2001) and is promoted by several land use patterns evident in the species’ range including forest fragmentation, silviculture operations, and the presence of adjacent urban areas and agricultural areas. The specific impact of White-tailed Deer overabundance on Louisiana Trillium is currently poorly understood, but is likely to be contributing to ongoing population declines.

Introduced species may also constitute a threat to the species. Feral pigs (Sus domesticus) are known to cause habitat degradation leading to declines in related species outside the range of Louisiana Trillium (Bratton 1974) and are likely to cause population declines within the species’ range.

Additional population surveys are needed to better understand the species’ population trend. One impediment to precise range and population information is the difficulty distinguishing several related species within its range (Case and Case 2009). Because of this, population inferences made from herbarium specimens may be unreliable. The species is known to be included in the collections of at least four botanical gardens (BGCI 2019).
