État de la populationExpert

The total population of the species is thought to be around 2,000 individuals all of which occur in a single location threatened by construction for industrial development. Construction within the species’ habitat since its discovery in 1996 has resulted in destruction of some occurrences. Though some plants were rescued prior to construction, additional development is possible within the region and could result in population declines (Schilling et al. 2017).

Description complète des menacesExpert

Between the first observation of the species’ only known occurrence in 1995 and subsequent visits to the site, substantial portions of the species’ habitat were ditched, clearcut, levelled, and filled. Habitat degradation continues in portions of the species’ range as a result of development of the area (Schilling et al. 2017). Recent expansion of existing trucking yards adjacent to the species' known range may have caused loss of habitat and could lead to hydrology changes and increased runoff.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

Portions of the species’ range were thought to occur on land owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority and Dalton Utilities and cooperation agreements protecting the species’ range could potentially be arranged with these entities (Schilling et al. 2017). However, this status was recently found to be in error. At present, all occurrences are thought to be on privately held land. Surveys of the watershed containing the entire population of the species have been conducted, but additional research is necessary to determine if subpopulations exist outside this area. More information is also needed about the species’ life history, and ecology. No ex situ seed germplasm collections are known at this time (Center for Plant Conservation 2019). However, the species is known to be in cultivation and is easily propagated vegetatively and by seed.
