The largest known subpopulation of Trillium delicatum contains hundreds of individuals. Population declines have been noted as a result of disturbance by feral hogs, but the damaged subpopulation is noted to have partially recovered (Schilling et al. 2019). The population trajectory is likely to be in decline as a result of habitat degradation. Given the nature of threats to the species (primarily habitat destruction and disturbance caused by feral hogs) the species can be considered to occur in four locations. Extreme fluctuations have been observed in some subpopulations as a result of rooting by feral hogs. At this time, population monitoring of occurrences on private property is not sufficient to determine if these fluctuations apply to the entire population.

Habitat loss and degradation resulting from logging activities and feral hogs (Sus domesticus) are the primary threat to the species at present. Rooting by feral hogs disturbs the plants and has had documented impacts on one subpopulation. Efforts undertaken by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources have prevented total extirpation of the species at two additional sites (Schilling et al. 2019).

Twelve experimental plots approximately one square meter in size were covered in wire fencing in 2016 in an effort to protect plants from hog damage. These plots show potential for recovery of population if hog damage is prevented, but do not adequately address the threat posed by feral hogs in the region (Schilling et al. 2019). Additional surveys are needed to better assess the distribution and abundance of the species and further efforts are required to control feral hog population in the species’ range. The species is not known to be included in any ex situ plantings or seed banks (BGCI 2019, Center for Plant Conservation 2019).
