There is no population size data available for this species but it is considered to consist of a small number of individuals. Some subpopulations have been found in Kon Tum (Ngoc Linh), Gia Lai (Kon Ha Nung, Kon Ka Kinh, K’Rong). It is common in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, and less common in Indonesia (Kamiya et al. 2002). The chromosome number is different between the Hainan (2n=14) and Malaysian (2n=42) subpopulations (Chen and Sun 2010).

This species occurs in areas where the forest has been fragmented. There has been habitat loss due to the forest clearance for timber in Kon Ha Nung. Land-use change and habitat destruction are the main threats to the subpopulations. The quality of habitat will likely degrade with increasing economic and touristic development of the Chinese Hainan Province.

It is necessary to protect this species and not to cut mature trees and existing individuals with the distribution at Ngoc Linh. Forest areas where the species is found should be assessed for effectiveness in protection against illegal logging and land-use conversion. At least some of the known subpopulations could occur in protected natural areas (such as the Mount Kinabalu subpopulation). No ex situ collections are recorded (trees recorded from PR China Botanical Gardens appear to not be found anymore). An ex situ conservation plan should be implemented, preferably in regions where this species is native, and involve local communities. The population size and trends should be researched.
