No numerical population information is available, and the current trend is unknown. The species is known from two herbarium specimens collected in 1979 and 1982, and is therefore suspected to be rare.

This species is endemic to Bolivia, where it is known from two localities within the Potosi Department. It occurs within the Bolivian montane dry forests, which are among one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world (Portillo-Quintero and Sánchez-Azofeifa 2009). It contains large areas of degraded land, and the region is heavily impacted by urban expansion and the associated conversion to agriculture (Fjeldså and Mayer 1996). Both collections in Potosi were made in the Nor Chichas Province, with one very near to the city of Cotagaita, which has been expanding since the species was collected (Google Earth 2023). It is likely to be threatened by grazing and other vegetation clearance here, as human encroachment is reaching the high altitudes.
