There is very little population information available, with just one herbarium specimen which details that one individual was observed during collection. The species is known from four herbarium specimens collected between 1977 and 2001. This species is therefore thought to be rare.

This species is endemic to Bolivia, where it is known from three localities in the Santa Cruz Department, and one in the Chuquisaca Department. It occurs within the Bolivian montane dry forests ecoregion, which is among one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world (Portillo-Quintero and Sánchez-Azofeifa 2009), containing large areas of degraded land, and the region is heavily impacted by urban expansion and the associated conversion to agriculture (Fjeldså and Mayer 1996).

In the Santa Cruz Department, all three of the occurrences are within a 10 km radius however two fall within the Florida province and one falls within the Andrés Ibáñez province. The collection in the Andrés Ibáñez province does not fall within a protected area and is in close proximity to extensive land transformation associated with plantations, small holder farming and cattle grazing associated with the La Angostura populated area, where most of the forest has been converted to agricultural land use in the last 20 years (Castelli et al. 2017). In the Florida province, both occurrences fall within the and on the edge of the Rio Grande Valles Cruceños Natural Integrated Management Area, where extensive cattle grazing, and agricultural forest clearance is occurring and observable using satellite imagery around the occurrences (Google Earth 2023) and it has been proposed that the protection level of this site be increased (Fundación Natura Bolivia 2007). In the Chuquisaca Department, the collection site is located near to the Ruta Nacional 38 main road (Google Earth 2023).
