The species is considered widespread in Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan (Lamb et al. 2013). It is most commonly found in Sabah in hill forest at lower altitudes (300-800 m asl) (Lamb et al. 2013). Habitat degradation suggests that there is a negative population trend, at least in parts of the distribution.

Forests of Borneo and Sumatra are under continuous threat of being logged and the land converted to e.g. palm oil plantations (WWF 2019). Over 30 % of the tree cover within the extent of occurrence (EOO) was lost between 2000 and 2017 (GFW 2019).

Some individuals have been found in Gunung Mulu National Park, in which they should be protected (ZRC 2019, Protected Planet 2019). The species has not been recorded by BGCI (2018) to be grown ex situ.
