There is no detailed population level information available for this species. It is only known from three herbarium specimens, collected in 1859-1860, 1937 and 1952. This part of Angola is relatively well collected and so it is likely that this species is truly scarce, although sedges are often overlooked.

Little is known about this species except that it was found growing near the river close to Humpata and Palanca in the Huíla Province. It was last collected in 1952. This whole area is now largely covered with small and large agricultural fields (Mendelsohn 2019, Google Earth 2020), hence, it is treated as a single threat-based location. Due to a lack in collecting efforts, it is unclear whether the species still persists in this area, and whether it may occur in a broader range, although the Lubango Highlands (Serra de Chela) are known for their high numbers of local plant endemics, with potentially over 200 endemic species (Goyder and Gonçalves 2020).
