Much of the Beni savanna is subject to grazing pressure by cattle and intense seasonal burning for forage, with the central and southern areas particularly affected (Schipper 2022a), and similar threats are present in the humid Chaco of Paraguay (Schipper 2022b). Drainage and irrigation of the savanna represents a further threat to plant diversity in these areas (M. Martinez pers. comm. 2022). Impacts upon the Beni Biological Station Biosphere Reserve include population expansion in surrounding areas and encroachment, increased road traffic, and logging activities. In areas surrounding the reserve, most natural vegetation has been lost (Brace et al. 1997).
