Scleria guineensis

The most significant threats are associated with open cast bauxite mining in the Kindia area, habitat degradation as a consequence of increasing human activities (due to urban expansion), the building of hydroelectric dams and extraction of water for human use (A. Mesterhazy pers. obs. 2011), and the increasing occurrence of droughts.

It is known from only two specimens collected in 1943 (type: Boismare 387, between Friguiagbé and Toumou) and 2011 (Mesterhazy 120, Forêt Classée Grandes Chutes). Both can be considered as the same location (see further).

This area although partially protected is being transformed into a large open cast bauxite mine (A. Mesterhazy pers. obs. 2011, M. Cheek and C. Couch pers. obs. Oct. 2015, and clearly visible on Google Earth imagery Dec. 2015). In 2011, a specialist searched for the species at what was described as the collecting locality on the type specimen (between Friguiagbé and Toumou), however, he could not locate it there. He did locate it a bit further at Forêt Classée Grandes Chutes, and noted that the locality information on the historical type label was likely imprecise and that the species should therefore be considered as a point endemic only known from the Forêt Classée Grandes Chutes (A. Mesterhazy pers. comm.).

No specific conservation measures or management plan are in place for this species.

It is recorded from the following protected area: Foret Classée Grandes Chutes (Kindia).
